United to hold testimonial match for Wayne Rooney

during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and Burnley at Old Trafford on February 11, 2015 in Manchester, England.

Wayne Rooney‘s time at Manchester United will be honored next summer as the club will host a testimonial match in his name.

Rooney is currently in his 12th season with United, and serves as the club captain.
Throughout his career at Old Trafford, Rooney has won the Premier League five times, the League Cup twice, and helped the team to Champions League title in 2008. He has scored 236 goals for United, behind only Sir Bobby Charlton’s mark of 249.
Rooney said he was honored with being given a testimonial, as all the proceeds from the match will go to different charities.
I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality.
Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club. The match night will obviously be special for me and my family but I hope it will be a night of celebration for all involved and that we can also deliver one or two surprises.
Most of all I hope the fans will come out in force and help raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities, all of which are very close to my heart for different reasons.
Testimonial matches are usually held when a club legend retires or leaves, with United’s most recent match held in 2013 for Rio Ferdinand. However, Rooney will be honored while still at the club, with the game featuring a United XI and a team yet to be named.
Rooney joined United from Everton as an 18-year-old in 2004, for what was a record transfer fee for a teenager at the time. He scored a hat-trick in his debut, a Champions League win over Fenerbahce.
