Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron says his fellow Argentina countryman Lionel Messi once told him he would like to play for Inter Milan.


Messi scored the opening goal in Barcelona's 3-0 victory over River Plate in the Club World Cup final at the weekend.

He lifted the trophy for the third time in his career with the Spanish club, who he has played for his entire career.

But Veron, who also enjoyed spells in Serie A with Parma and Inter Milan as well as time in England, claims Messi was once interested in the idea of playing in Italy.

'It's been a few years, but one time he told me he would like to play for Inter,' Veron is quoted as saying in Tuttosport.

'But let me be clear, this was something that happened in the past.

'Massimo Moratti was still the owner of Inter and, frankly, I see it impossible for Leo to leave Barcelona.'

But Veron doubts it will ever happen and says he thinks it is 'impossible' for him to leave Barcelona.

As well as playing for Inter, Veron also played in England for Chelsea and Manchester United.

Messi's Barcelona are currently level with Atletico Madrid on 35 points at the top of La Liga but Luis Enrique's side have played 16 games, one less than Diego Simeone's, due to Club World Cup involvement.

Inter Milan lead Serie A on 36 points, one clear of Fiorentina and Napoli.
